About Pench Tigers

Pench National Park in Madhya Pradesh happily revealed the rise in the number of Royal Bengal Tigers to 44 compared to 31 in 2016. This estimation exercise conducted jointly by Wildlife Conservation Trust (WCT) and Pench Tiger Foundation was held in January 2017 where an upsurge in the number of tigers was recorded in East Pench (Sillari), Chorbahuli, Saleghat and Deolapar areas of Mansinghdeo Sanctuary, and Paoni and Nagalwadi. However, the given count also includes few tigers that have died since estimation exercise, on the other side, the number of tiger cubs, which are reckoned to be around 7 or 8 remains excluded. Since January 2017, when the census was underway, Pench has lost four tigers, out of which two died in territorial fights. It is being believed that of the 44 tigers inhabiting in the national park, 22 are males and 22 are females. Here are some of the famous tigers of Pench who draw the attention of many wildlifers with her Big Cat antics!

Collarwali Tigress

Known to be the princess among tigers of Pench and one of the most successful mothers of the tiger clan, she is the only tigress to have entered into the Guinea's Book of World Records for her outstanding ability to rear progeny. Together with her sister and two brothers she grew up under the spotlight of the wildlife 'Big Brother' TV programme, as the four cubs of the 'Spy in the Jungle' series, which was to be such a huge hit around the world in 2008.This beautiful lady rules the surrounding area near Pench River. Most famous tigress of Pench, she is just 10 years old. Having mothered 22 cubs over a span of life period of 11 years, she has successfully reared. Easily recognized thanks to the radio collar, the joke goes that it is impossible for the forest officials to remove her dysfunctional collar coz she is either expecting or rearing cubs! Currently she is seen with 3 of her cubs from her latest litter of four (one did not survive). She is the daughter of the famed charger and Barimada.

BMW Tiger

This is a huge hulk of Pench. He is called BMW because of the notable marking of letters B, M and W on its left thigh. First sighted in 2006 this male is about 11 years of age. BMW's ancestry is unknown but he has fathered cubs of many Pench tigresses. Naturally shy BMW was always elusive, preferring to use forest trails, over roads and tracks, to get about his large southern kingdom. Of unknown and much discussed origin, there are stories of him coming from the South, probably from the Maharashtra side of Pench. Arch rival of the male, Sula, compels him to be constantly on the move in defense of his precious home turf. He has established his own family thanks to his courting days with 'Badi Maa' and then Baghinallah tigress.

Raiyakasa Male / Sula Tiger

A male in his prime and arch rival of the BMW, he has succeeded in establishing dominance in the Karmajhari range. Initially shy and reserved, he gradually got used to the tourist traffic and was seen more frequently in the last year. He was named 'Sula' after the famous wine brand, due to a wine glass marking on the very bottom of his body. He has been a constant mate of Collarwali, bringing into the world tiny striped tots three times. He has his territory in raiyakassa area. This 10 year old hunk is very charming and is favorite boy of Pench.

Baghinala Female

Sister of the famous Collorwali tigress, this one is shy and reserved. She grew up in spotlight of her vivacious sister but eventually opened up, got her own territory and has mothered multiple litters. Currently, she has 4 cubs all hale and hearty and lives happily in the Mowgli Land.

He was cub of Badi Mada born in year early 2006 and now counted as aged male tiger. He was among 4 cubs of Badi Mada tiger in which 2 are male and 2 were females. He was radio collared in his youth but he managed to remove it.
